I love primitive decor! It is a great mix of shabby chic, hand-me-down, garage sale, and flea market treasures. It’s the kind of embellishing where you pick up an old metal watering may and turn it into a table lamp, or drag out an old banged up trunk, add a few more stress marks, spray paint it and use it as a funky new coffee table…or as a storage chest for pillows and blankets at the foot of your bed.

Do you have a pair of old corresponding night stands that you hate? Turn one upside down on the other…fill the top with greenery, and if they had drawers, remove them and the slides. It gives you an interesting bookcase. Spray paint the inside an interesting color. Old chests of drawers make outstanding storage cabinets in your walk in closet, basement, garage, or outdoors for pool toys and such. You need to give it a protective coating if it will be outside. Now, isn’t this fun?

Believe it or not, they have a variation on this now called “upscale primitive.” What they do is make primitive pieces of the finest woods and well crafted, then hurt them to give them the cracked or distressed look of primitive decor. Hellllloooooo!

In these times of environmental crises, recycling will have to be the name of the game, my friends! So make a list of the new garages sales, estate sales, barn auctions, flea markets, and consignment shops, and get out there and recycle a great deal of stuff. It will give your home a new look for just pennies, and you will have fun creating new things from the old.

5A pretty book and an interesting read also
By Tim
“The photographs in this book are actually beautiful, and a lot of of them are full page or even two page spreads, which is great because it shows the gorgeous textures, colors and wear in each primitive piece. I’ve not seen any photographs before that genuinely do justice to the primitive style like this book does.

I have not read all the text yet as I just got my copy, but what I’ve read has been well-written and interesting. It will give anybody a good understanding of what primitives are and how they may be integrated into any home, even a more contemporary one. My wife and I have been adding primitive pieces to our own home in a rather random fashion, and this book gives us ideas for blending future pieces into our décor.

I would highly commend this book to any individual who is fascinated in primitives, folk art and home design, or who just wants an beautiful and well-designed coffee table book.”

I bought this book because I am familiar with the work of Franklin & Esther Schmidt. What a talented couple and what a beautiful book. It still has not made it to my bookshelf, I just keep picking it up over & over again. Not getting much work done! If you are one of those people who enjoys decorating with antiques & primitives, this is for you.
